About 650,000 additional technology workers would be needed by 2030 to meet demand, according to a Federal Government report.

The tech sector has been targeted for jobs growth

Industry and Science Minister Ed Husic said a pathway to a total 1.2 million tech-related jobs was set in the report.

Husic said there were five “calls to action” recommended including targeting skilled migration to areas of high need and fixing gaps in education.

He said the Government was already taking action by boosting the national training system.

“We will make tech a priority area for the 465,000 fee-free TAFE places and additional 20,000 university places this Government will deliver,” he said.

“We are also committed to improving migration settings to support high productivity and wages in all sectors, including the tech sector.”

He said Government moves to clear the backlog of skilled visa applications would provide a boost.
